Dear Membership:

After much consideration, I have decided to cancel the next Membership meeting scheduled for Sunday, September 5th for the following reasons:

I asked for updated information pertaining to the status of our membership and upon receipt, realized that over 90% of the membership is delinquent in their dues.

I have done a cursory survey of many of the members and they have expressed they have never received any information concerninig their status as members and need time to be allowed to come current.

As you may know, for musicians, coming up with dues, that could very well be for some $32.50 or more is a hardship, and since the life blood of this organization is its musicians/members, they must be given time to re-instate and become eligible for any voting privileges that exist.

When I have received evidence that all the delinquent members have been identified, contacted and given sufficient time to become current with their dues, I will re-set the Membership Meeting.

To assist the Secretary with this matter, all that have not paid their dues, please go to our website, http://www.thefoundationjamson.org/, download an application, come into the office at the foundation and pay delinquent dues. The 1st Quarter Dues covers January-March / 2nd Quarter Dues covers April-June / 3rd Quartet Dues covers July-Sept. and 4th Quarter Dues covers Oct.-Dec.

I believe that this is a fair and equitable way to handle this and sincerely hope all will respect the decision.

Thank you,

Located in the heart of the Historic 18th and Vine Jazz District, Kansas City’s Mutual Musicians Foundation is one of the country’s principal cradles of jazz along with New York, New Orleans and Chicago.

The Foundation bred numerous nationally significant big bands and a legion of talented soloists who revolutionized American jazz. Among these jazz artists are such luminaries as Count Basie, Jay McShann, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Andy Kirk, Jimmy Rushing, Big Joe Turner, Hot Lips Page, Mary Lou Williams, Buck Clayton … (continued)

These musicians belonged to Local 627, one of the African-American musicians unions affiliated with the American Federation of Musicians. Established in 1917, Local 627, then known as the “Colored Musicians Union” operated as a social center, engagement clearinghouse and as a vehicle for grievances against unfair practices by booking agents and band leaders.

The jazz style pioneered and fostered by Local 627 members developed along original lines influenced by, yet unique from, the traditions of New Orleans, Chicago and New York. The Mutual Musicians Foundation, Inc., originally incorporated to manage the building and Local 627′s assets, continued operating the building after the 1970 merger with Local 34. Jazz has been played continuously here since 1930 when Local 627 moved into the building, making it the longest running Jazz place in the United States and in the world.

Harold O’Neal is an American Jazz Pianist, Actor, Producer, Martial Artist, Bboy, Composer, and Magician. Harold has studied at the Paseo Academy of Performing Arts, Berklee College of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with jazz master Kenny Baron.

Harold’s career took off when he started touring with Jazz Saxophonist Bobby Watson in 2001. After arriving in New York City, Harold began to establish a name for himself in the international jazz scene having performed with many jazz greats such as Elvin Jones, Kenny Garrett, Richard Davis, Nicholas Payton, Joe Chambers, Paquito D’Rivera, Roy Hargrove, Ahmad Alaadeen, Jeff tain Watts, Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, Marvin Smitty Smith, and many others. In 2002, Harold was introduced to Greg Osby by jazz legend Andrew Hill which led to his major label recording debut on Greg Osby’s 2003 release “St. Louis Shoes” for Blue Note Records. Harold received high critical praise for his contributions to the recording and later the same year performed for a private event for Bill Cosby. Mentored by the great Bobby Watson at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, trumpeter Hermon Mehari, saxophonist William Sanders, pianist John Brewer, bassist Ben Leifer, and drummer Ryan Lee possess a fearless approach to creating and performing and aspire to expand the jazz demographic, garnering increased appreciation from younger audiences for the music.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The Mutual Musicians Foundation(MMF) has a new grand piano. The announcement was made by President Will Matthews and Chairman Clarence Smith on June 16, 2010 as a result of an Emergency Board and Membership Meeting that was conducted on June 14th. And, after due administrative process and having been presented with the facts and options, those present among the Mutual Musicians Foundation Membership voted unanimously in favor of a motion to purchase the much needed piano. The next steps involved President Matthews and Chairman Smith securing the funds to purchase the piano. Later that day, Vice President Anita Dixon and Board Member Christopher Clarke traveled with the Chairman to the previously selected piano dealer and worked out the specific details of the MMF’s purchase.

THE CROWN JEWEL OF KANSAS CITY JAZZ

Located in the heart of the Historic 18th and Vine Jazz District, Kansas City’s Mutual Musicians Foundation is one of the country’s principal cradles of jazz along with New York, New Orleans and Chicago. The Foundation bred numerous nationally significant big bands and a legion of talented soloists who revolutionized American jazz. Among these jazz artists are such luminaries as Count Basie, Jay McShann, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Andy Kirk, Jimmy Rushing, Big Joe Turner, Hot Lips Page, Mary Lou Williams and Buck Clayton, among many more too numerous to name here.

The Mutual Musicians Foundation, Inc., originally incorporated to manage the building and Local 627’s assets, continued operating the building after the 1970 merger with Local 34.

Jazz has been played continuously within the walls of the Mutual Musicians Foundation building at 1823 Highliand Avenue in Kansas City since 1930 – when Local 627 moved into the building, making it the longest running Jazz place in the United States and in the world.

NEW PIANO FOR THE FOUNDATION

The Mutual Musicians Foudation has been in dire need of a new piano for many years. The “White” grand piano that is located downstairs is extremely old and not in the best of playing condition.

Chairman Smith, Schmidt Music Representative and Board Member Clarke

And, the historic “Jay McShann” grand piano that was once used upstairs, now currently sits on display somewhere over at the American Jazz Museum, and rightfully so. Any consideration of putting it back on duty for full time upstairs use during the Late Night Sessions or for other Concerts would surely have resulted in eventual destruction of an iconic and irreplaceable instrument.

In addition to the world famous Late Night Jam, the Mutual Musicians Foundation hosts a variety of music performance, education and community service related events. If you or your not-for-profit organization would like to conduct an activity or host a function at the MMF, contact your Executive Board of Directors with your proposal and the details of your activity. Every effort is made to accommodate and support all requests and events in accordance with the MMF By-Laws.

Following is an example of a Featured Activity supported at the Mutual Musicians Foundation:

YOUNG JAZZ MASTERS

The Young Jazz Masters (YJM) is an early jazz preparatory program aimed at serving Kansas City Metropolitan Youth that wish to further their music education and research in the fundamentals of jazz studies. This early jazz program will provide research literature, music, active listening labs, and workshops that will challenge and educate students of America’s true art form.

We ask that all participants complete an application which will include a brief essay on his/her interest in jazz music. Participants will have to provide their own instruments and travel to rehearsal site. Prior music experience is not necessary in order to be a part of this program, only enthusiasm and dedication!
